"Finally, a new waterfront project"

Squamish, B.C. - (June 5, 2008) - After ten years of waiting Squamish’s waterfront will finally begin to see another redevelopment project to add to Marina Estates. We wonder how, considering the spiraling real estate market of the last decade it has taken so long to approve a new development on Squamish’s waterfront?
This isn’t land, after all, that should require people a lot of coercion to relocate to. This is property with arguably some of the most spectacular views in the world. Go to Sydney, Rio De Janeiro or a little closer to home, take a stroll on Kits Beach or English Bay in Vancouver and then compare the views from those waterfronts to Squamish, and you’ll find the vista down the Howe Sound, surrounded by towering peaks on three sides is in the same league.
The difference is those cities have embraced their ocean front, it’s part of their civic experience. Granted Squamish isn’t a city of millions and we have to expect change to move at a slower pace, but at some point a slower pace, one suspects, is simply an excuse to do nothing. Why deny ourselves the natural asset lying at our door-step, why not create a space that people will flock to rather than shun? There was always interest in creating residential and commercial opportunities there, along with public space and a long promised walkway but those interests ultimately came to nothing – in the face of what? Apparently some invisible monolith that blocked all progress.
Now, we hope things will be different people are tired of nothing and want to realize the possibilities.
Our neighbours to the north will no doubt wag their collective finger, as they seem to be taking a greater interest in all things Squamish these days, telling us not too dream too big and to leave the grand ideas to them. We however look forward to the days when visitors come to experience Squamish’s vibrant waterfront, and then recall, oh yes there’s a ski resort up the highway as well.
