"Developer helps Women's Center buy permanent new home in Squamish"

Squamish, B.C. – (March 4, 2008)Westmana Development Corporation has given the Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society a donation of more than $100,000 to allow them to complete the purchase of a permanent home in Squamish on Feb. 29, and another $80,000 to renovate it.

The Women’s Centre will move into their new building in April, as soon as the mirrors, jacuzzis, sinks and other equipment from the former massage parlour are removed and some interior walls are taken down to make room for a drop-in centre, counseling support rooms and offices. The new location will be 38021 Third Avenue in downtown Squamish.

“Westmana looks for opportunities to be actively involved in the communities where we are engaged, and this was a very worthwhile opportunity,” says Westmana Development Corporation principal René David. “Giving the Women’s Centre enough money to purchase and renovate a permanent location will let them get on with the essential work they do helping the people of Squamish. They no longer have to worry about being tenants.”

For the last 21 months, Westmana has been providing the Howe Sound Women’s Centre the rent-free use of a building on Westmana property. That building on Logger’s Lane will be vacated by the end of April as Westmana moves forward to develop the half-acre site into a 69-suite condominium community called MirEAU, part of the Squamish waterfront redevelopment. Site preparation is scheduled to begin in May.

“To say we’re delighted with this significant donation is an understatement,” says Women’s Centre executive director Allison Twiss. “We can begin tearing down walls and redoing floors immediately and we expect to move before the end of April. There will be room for our counseling support rooms for women and children, multi-cultural outreach program, legal assistance program and other activities. We would like to thank Westmana for their sizeable donation which secures our future, and allows us to continue to serve our community for the long term. The donation also lays the foundation to enable us to expand our much needed services.”

MirEAU is Westmana Development Corporation's newest project development in Squamish. Plans call for 69 residential apartments and condominiums, made up of studios, 1-bedrooms, 2–bedrooms, and live/work units. MirEAU is designed for young families and active, outdoor recreation enthusiasts who want to live right on the Squamish waterfront. Westmana also plans to create a public promenade with a decidedly urban feel as part of the development, making MirEAU the first stage of the Squamish waterfront redevelopment.

Westmana Development Corporation, established in 1996, is currently developing more than 3,400 residential units on resort and urban land holdings in Squamish, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan.
