Vancouver 2010 Sea–to–Sky Volunteer Centre confirmed for Squamish, BC as Call for Volunteers Launched Today

Vancouver, B.C. - (February 12, 2008) – With the launch of the Vancouver 2010 Call for Volunteers today, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) announced that Squamish will be home to the new Sea-to-Sky Volunteer Centre.

The Volunteer Centre will serve as the primary regional hub for recruitment, deployment and training for volunteers residing in the Sea-to-Sky corridor. The facility will also host many workforce planning activities in the lead up to the 2010 Winter Games.

Over 5,000 volunteers are expected to go through the Sea-to-Sky Volunteer Centre between mid-2008 and 2010. Approximately 10,000 volunteers will be required in the Sea-to-Sky corridor at Games-time filling hundreds of different roles.

“Squamish is located in the heart of the Olympic and Paralympic theatre and with only two years remaining until the 2010 Winter Games, we are pleased to confirm the excellent location of the volunteer centre that will serve volunteers in the Sea-to-Sky corridor,” said Donna Wilson, VANOC executive vice president, Workforce and Sustainability. “Along with the athletes, volunteers are vital to the success of the Games and the residents of Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton and the surrounding communities will play an important role in making the 2010 Winter Games a success. We encourage everyone to apply for a volunteer experience of a lifetime, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the Volunteer Centre over the coming months.”

“Squamish is an enthusiastic community with committed volunteers. Having the centre here makes it very convenient for our citizens to get actively involved,” said Squamish Mayor Ian Sutherland. “We welcome the opportunity to host the thousands of volunteers from throughout the Sea-to-Sky corridor as they prepare to do their part to ensure spectacular Winter Games in 2010

Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed expressed his support for the centre. “As Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Winter Games, we look forward to working with our Sea-to-Sky neighbours to deliver an outstanding event. Success in 2010 will take the combined efforts and support of all Sea-to-Sky residents and the Volunteer Centre in Squamish will be the gateway to an extraordinary experience for our volunteers.”

An extensive review throughout the Sea-to-Sky Corridor assessing space and amenity requirements resulted in the selection of the Spectacle Building in Squamish. The venue, which provides 5,000 square feet of space, has high visibility from Highway 99, can be easily accessed by public transit, and is accessible to persons with disabilities.

The Sea-to-Sky Volunteer Centre is at the north end of Squamish, only 35 minutes south of Whistler, with easy access for all Sea-to-Sky residents. Located in the new Spectacle building at 40437 Tantalus Road behind the Petro-Canada Station, just east of Highway 99 at the Mamquam Road intersection, the Centre is near public transit and the Greyhound station, and features ample public parking space.

VANOC today launched the nationwide Call for Volunteers seeking 25,000 exceptional Canadians who are ready to put their hearts into creating an event that will inspire the world. Aspiring volunteers can apply online at www.vancouver2010.com and through www.volunteer.workopolis.com. Applicants without Internet access at home are encouraged to visit locations such as BC libraries, the 2010 Information Centre in Whistler or Internet cafés.

VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010. Vancouver and Whistler will host the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
