"Sea to Sky Community Services Gets Support from Developer"
Squamish, B.C. – (June 12, 2008) – Westmana Development Corporation is helping the Sea to Sky Community Services Society to keep offering its parenting and healthy pregnancy programs to Squamish area residents. Westmana will cover the organization’s rent for two years in new premises as well as costs of renovations so that these valued programs can continue without a break.
Westmana has donated $20,000 to cover Sea to Sky Community Services costs of renting space in the Squamish United Church annex at 38014 – 4th Avenue for the next two years, as well as the additional costs of renovating the kitchen. The new counters, wiring and plumbing will assist not only the community organization but also the church.
“This is the first time that we have worked with a developer in this way,” says Lois Wynne, executive director of the Sea to Sky Community Services Society. “It turns out that we’re not so far away from one another in terms of assisting with community development and providing services.”
Sea to Sky Community Services had been occupying space rent-free in a building that Westmana owns on Logger’s Lane in Squamish. That location will become a new oceanfront development, MirEAU, which last week unanimously passed third reading by Squamish council. MirEAU is being developed by Mamquam Oceanfront Properties, a joint venture between Westmana and Aldex Canada Enterprises.
The drop-in parenting programs and the healthy outreach pregnancy programs are well suited to sharing space with Squamish United Church. “There isn’t a lot of available community space in Squamish,” says Wynne, “so those who have space share it.”
The community services society is hoping to own its own premises in the future, and will hold their 30th anniversary gala event on October 4 to begin that major fundraising campaign. Westmana will also be assisting Sea to Sky Community Services to organize and publicize that event as part of its ongoing commitment to the Squamish community.
