Vision

Ocean's Gateway proposes a vibrant, compact, complete, mixed community adjacent to and composed with the existing historic Downtown of Squamish and the future redevelopment of the D.O.S. Peninsula Lands. By opening up the waterfront to the public, accommodating a diverse mix of people and land uses, and connecting the area to Downtown and other surrounding context, this area will re-invigorate the Downtown. It will also revitalize for the people of Squamish the formerly restricted industrial waterfront as a place to live, work, shop and play. It is designed as a setting for an inclusive community that can house and serve people throughout their lives, providing a high standard of amenity and offering a diversity of places to live and work.

Taking inspiration from its magnificent surroundings, Ocean's Gateway is destined to become one of BC’s most prized waterfront communities. This will be a memorable place with a distinct identity created by honouring its regional and local context and its industrial history.

Ocean's Gateway will play a strong role in reducing the impact of development on the planet and local ecosystems by adhering to the highest standards of sustainable design and performance. This group of new neighbourhoods will be a model of energy, water and resource efficiency and healthy living as well as enhancing and restoring local ecosystems that support biodiversity.

Responding to the site:
The Project must respond to the uniqueness of the site in the following ways:
  1. Celebrating the meeting of a new human settlement with the water’s edge and exploring that relationship in terms of physical design;
  2. Taking advantage of the site’s great views and proximity to nature (water, rock, estuary);
  3. Providing significant amenities for the surrounding community in the form of commercial opportunities, waterfront access, a gateway to the Peninsula and a unique new district;
  4. Recalling the site’s history while setting the tone for its’ future;
  5. Emphasizing access to and enjoyment of the water for fun, sport, transportation, and visual delight.
